Carnival of the Mobilists No. 242

Costumes for Carnival and Halloween, via Way Cool PicturesApologies for the late posting this week, the Carnival of the Mobilists is entering a slower part of the hosting schedule. Nevertheless, there are always contributions coming in to color the past week with reflections of things harvesting in and around the mobile industry during this normally haunting time of year.

Statistics and Analysis

Andy Favell from MobiThinking starts off #242 with an interview with Susan Teltscher, head of market information and statistics, Telecommunication Development Bureau, ITU. Of note here is the number – 5 billion. Its all but confirmed now that we are in an area of use/acceptance with mobile that other industries will never see.

Peggy Anne Salz from MSearchGroove gives us a podcast and analysis of Arby’s (fast food restaurant) cross-marketing campaign which held several mobile lessons. The podcast from The Mobile Marketing Review included insights of consumer behavior and the potential to leverage this information over brands in emerging markets.

Rita El Khoury from Mobile R’n’R charts the divergence in mobile/web and asks if we will ever get back to that place of looking for convergence, or if the future is really more about stiching together the software, hardware, and services that works best for you.

Tablets and UX

Ajit Jaokar from Open Gardens checks in with some insights about pricing, usability, and the market potential of 7in and 10in tablets. A discussion that sticks close to a changing workflow of mine. Also check out the discussion at Forum Oxford that Ajit branched from his blog posting (registration required to view/participate).

My contribution to this week’s CoM looks at the tablet paradigm as well, and whether we’ve actually taken steps to address the question of inputing text and other content. As with mobiles, we can’t replicate the larger PC paradigm of input, something different has to be addressed.

Mobile Companies and Platforms

Tomi Ahonen from Communities Dominate Brands offers an analysis of Nokia based on their recently published Q3 financial results. They are doing better than some would have you believe, and many of the results are indeed a mixed bag for Nokia going forward.

Rafe Blandford from All About Symbian takes a look at the future of the Symbian platform. He pulls in developer, device, MeeGo, and even Symbian Foundation perspectives.

Tsahi Levent-Levi (guest posting at VisionMobile) maps evolution of the Android platform noting areas where its been pushing positively on one side, but lagging significantly on another. Given Google’s aims with Android, its an insightful and full look at this rising platform.

Francisco Kattan shuffles the tea leaves and picks apart Microsoft’s strategy with Windows Phone 7 through the lens of the XBox. Really good read and kind of makes you want to look at bit harder at the seemingly disparate moves by other companies in and around the mobile space.

Dean Bubley from Disruptive Wireless nailed several excellent subjects over the past week, but it is his astute observations of Sprint’s approach with mobile wallets that highlights his contributions to this week’s Carnival. Indeed, mobile money is here, but has several core issues to work out before being pushed harder in developed markets.
